Transferring Map Packages
Transferring map packages to the PN-40 is the fourth and final major step required to use imagery from the [Map Library Subscription] on the PN-40. In summary, these are the four steps.
- Select the types of imagery you want to use for the area you want to cover.
- Download the imagery from the DeLorme servers to your PC.
- Cut the imagery to put it into the format used by the PN-40.
- Download the cut map package from your PC to the PN-40.
Brief summary of Steps
In the previous step, you created a map package for a particular area, containing various types of imagery at selected zoom levels. The map package was saved on your PC. The final step in the process is to transfer the map package to the PN-40.
Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions
- If necessary, start Topo 7.
- Turn the PN-40 off.
- Connect it to the PC using the USB cable.
- Turn the PN-40 on.
- When prompted on the PN-40, scroll to Map Transfer and press Enter.
- Depending on where you want to store the map package, scroll to Transfer to SD Card or Transfer to Internal. Press Enter. This causes the PN-40 (internal memory or SD card, as appropriate) to appear as a removable USB drive on the PC.
- In Topo 7, select the Handheld Export tab, then click the Exchange button on the right.
- The Earthmate PN-Series GPS Exchange window opens. In the drop-down list in the upper right corner of the window, select the entry for "removable disk". Do not select the Earthmate PN-Series GPS itself.
- In the left list, you will see the information available in Topo 7. Click the plus sign to the left of Saved Map Packages. This will show you the list of individual map packages saved on your PC. Click to select the map package you want to send to the PN-40.
- Click the Send button between the two boxes to begin the transfer.
- Even though you have selected the correct options for map transfer, you may see an Earthmate PN-Series GPS Exchange warning window explaining how you should set things up for the fastest possible transfer. Click OK to proceed.
- An Earthmate PN-Series GPS Exchange progress window appears. You cannot do anything else in Topo 7 until the transfer completes. The time required depends on the size of the map package. Wait patiently.
- When the transfer is complete, the progress window disappears. Click Done in the Earthmate PN-Series GPS Exchange window.
- On the PN-40, the Done button is selected. Press Enter. This dismounts the removable USB drive.
- Turn the PN-40 off and disconnect it from the PC.
Your imagery is now ready to use.
Tip: There are faster ways to transfer large packages to an SD card. If you have an SD card reader, you can remove the card from the PN-40, place it in the reader, and copy the map package directly to the SD card. If you accepted the default setup when you installed Topo 7, you will find the map packages here:
c:\DeLorme Docs\Mobile Maps\
Look for filenames which begin with the name you assigned to the package. Copy all the files which begin with the package name to the SD card. Remove the card from the reader and place it back in the PN-40.
