Track FAQ

For additional information on Track Logs, see Track Management 101.

What are Tracks?

A track log is a recording of where you've been (i.e., a breadcrumb trail). The PN-40 can be setup to record each track point (your position) on a fixed time interval (i.e., every 1 second, every 5 seconds, every 60 seconds) or at a fixed distance (i.e., every 10 ft, every 100 ft, every 200 ft).

How many track points can the PN-40 store?

The absolute maximum is 110,000 points. This is broken down into one Active Track Log and 10 Saved Track logs. Each of these 11 track logs can be up to 10,000 points.

What happens when the Active Track Log fills up?

This depends on how you have your PN-40 configured. The PN-40 can be configured to:

  • Stop recording once the Active log is filled. This means you'd only have the first 10,000 points of a trip.
  • Start overwriting your track log from the beginning. This means you'd only have the last 10,000 points of a trip.
  • Record new track. This option will automatically save your active track, then clear it and continue recording. This means you won't lost any points until all 10 Saved Track log entries have been used and the Active track log is fill.

Why do I need them?

Well a track is a great way to record a hike and then follow it back out to the car so you don't get lost. Tracks are also useful to record and then Exchange to Topo USA and see where you were.

What can I do with them?

You can make your own trail maps shown here.
