Selecting Imagery

Selecting imagery is the first of four major steps required to use imagery from the [Library Subscription] on the PN-40. In summary, these are the four steps.

  1. Select the types of imagery you want to use for the area you want to cover.
  2. Download the imagery from the DeLorme servers to your PC.
  3. Cut the imagery to put it into the format used by the PN-40.
  4. Download the cut map package from your PC to the PN-40.

Brief summary of steps:

Use Topo 7 to select the types of imagery you want to use. You will also need to specify the area for which you want the imagery. Once you've done that, you will send your selections to the NetLink server. The server will prepare a dataset containing the requested information. You will be noitified, both within Topo 7 and by e-mail, when the dataset is ready for download. Typically, this will take less than half an hour, but the delay depends on the amount of data you request, as well as on pending requests from other users, and can sometimes take several hours.

Suggestions:

  • Until you get the hang of the process, start with a small area and simple imagery such as Black and White Aerial imagery (DOQQ).
  • Goto Options->Display and change the Magnification to 50%. This will allow you to select larger areas before needing to scroll the display.
  • Goto Options->Map Features and turn off all options. This will reduce the amount of "clutter" being displayed, which in turn makes seeing the selection grid lines easier.

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start Topo 7.
  2. Display the area for which you want imagery. Use the Find tab or any other means you find convenient.
  3. Select the NetLink tab.
  4. Click the Map Library button on the left.
  5. Select the type of imagery you want from the drop-down list just to the right of the Map Library button. Also make sure Delivery Method is set the Download. NOTE: After selecting the type of imagery, you can click on the "Samples and Coverage" link to see samples of the imagery and what area's of the country are available.

  1. Click the Select tool button to the left of the blue box.
  2. Click the grid squares for which you want this type of imagery. You can also left-click and drag to select a rectangular area. If necessary, reposition the map (by dragging at the edges) so you can complete your selection.
    • There is a limit to how big each selection can be (in sq km) based on Map Data type:
      • USGS 1:24L Quads - 1000 sq km limit
      • Color DOQQ - 250 sq km limit
      • SAT10 - 1000 sq km limit
      • USGS DOQQ - 500 sq km limit
      • USGS Hi-REs 133 City - 25 sq km limit
  1. When your selection is complete, click the Add to List button to the left of the blue box.

  1. You will be prompted to name your selection. The name you choose will identify the data when it is available for download, and later on your PC. Type the name and click OK.

    • A note about naming your selections: Because the downloading of imagery and the cutting of imagery is a totally separate process, don't worry about what name to use. I just number them sequentially (i.e., OR24K1, OR24K2, OR24K3, etc).
  1. You will now see your current Selection List. Think of this as your "shopping cart." If you have selected all the imagery you need at this time, click Checkout and continue with the next step. If not, click Shop On and return to step 5.

    • NOTE: You can have more than one type of imagery in your Selection List.
    • NOTE: To delete an order from your Selection List, click on the red "X".
    • NOTE: To see the selected grids for an order in your Selection List, click on the little arrow to the left of the red X".
  1. When you select Checkout, an IE window will open, read the description of what will happen next. Click Submit Order to send your order to the NetLink server for processing.

Selecting NOAA chart(s)

The selection of NOAA charts is slightly different. For NOAA charts, you don't select grids, you simply select the desired chart(s) from a list.

You can change the types of charts listed by changing the List Charts list.

You can also change how the charts are sorted:

A word about file sizes:

The size of each order depends on the number of grids selected and the type of imagery. Below is a table with approx values:
