Reset Options

Perform these resets at your own risk--many of them will cause a loss of data in internal memory. If possible save any wanted tracks, routes, or waypoints to Topo7 before performing these. Data on SD card should be unaffected by these resets.

Most of the information on this page taken from this post by Sanaghan.

Soft Reset from power on state

Simple reset: device will reboot with no loss of data.

With power on: Hold down power until unit reboots (takes at least 10 seconds).

2. Soft Reset from power off state

Use this operation when the unit freezes repeatedly shortly after boot. This sequence was provided by DeLorme staff with no further explanation. Apparently it does not result in loss of any user data.

  1. Shut off the PN-40, if not already off.
  2. Press Page, Mark (the push-pin), Enter, and Power at the same time. (4-fingers!)
  3. Release all but Power.
  4. The unit will reset and boot.

3. Medium Reset

This will return settings to factory defaults, but will not erase any data.

  1. Press Menu, select Device Setup, Press Enter
  2. Select Restore Setup Defaults, Enter.
  3. Press Quit to return to Device Setup Page.

4. Hard Reset

This will return settings to factory defaults and erase all internal memory (waypoints, tracks, routes, and internal maps). The basemap will not be erased. This process essentially returns the PN-40 to its "out-of-the-box" state. Neither SD memory nor firmware is affected.

  1. Press Menu, select Device Setup, Press Enter
  2. Select Restore to Factory Defaults, Enter.

5. Hard(er) Reset

Sanaghan offers this combination which worked on earliest firmwares on the PN-20. I am not aware that it has been attempted on v1.5 of the PN-20 or any versions of the PN-40. I'm not sure exactly what it does, but I presume it to do at least as much erasing as #3 above.

  • With power on: Press Menu + Mark + Enter + IN (4-fingers!)

6. Low level Format (maps not affected)

Some unusual behavior can be caused by corrupted data in internal memory. This will format the waypoints/tracks section and leave your maps alone.

  1. With power OFF: Hold down menu + page + power all at same time for 4 seconds or so until you get blue screen
  2. Press ENTER to continue
  3. Select Media, ENTER
  4. Select Internal 1 (user data), ENTER
  5. Select Format, ENTER
  6. Select Yes
  7. When complete, press QUIT
  8. Select Reboot or Power down as desired, Press Enter.

7. Low level Format (user data not affected)

Maps can be corrupted in internal memory. This will format the maps section and leave your waypoints/tracks alone.

  1. With power OFF: Hold down menu + page + power all at same time for 4 seconds or so until you get blue screen
  2. Press ENTER to continue
  3. Select Media, ENTER
  4. Select Internal 2 (user maps), ENTER
  5. Select Format, ENTER
  6. Select Yes
  7. When complete, press QUIT
  8. Select Reboot or Power down as desired, Press Enter.

8. Low level format (complete)

This reformats all of internal memory. After executing this process you will need to reinstall the firmware which includes the basemap.

  1. With power OFF: Hold down menu + page + power all at same time for 4 seconds or so until you get blue screen
  2. Press ENTER to continue
  3. Select Media, ENTER
  4. Select Low Level Internal Reformat , ENTER
  5. Select Format, ENTER
  6. Select Yes
  7. When complete, press QUIT
  8. Select Reboot or Power down as desired, Press Enter.
  9. Proceed to Delorme support page for latest firmware update (see below)
