General FAQ

Is the user manual available online?

Yes. The Quick Start Manual is also available. Additionally, a manual incorporating 2.5beta firmware changes is available here.

Does DeLorme have a FAQ for the PN-40?

Umm, no. There are a few articles available. Start here. They do provide excellent technical support. You can find contact information here.

Is there a user community where I can get help?

Yes. Many of the same users who contribute here frequent the Earthmate GPS PN-40 Forum. Feel free to post your questions there. Some of the same folks also frequent the Groundspeak GPS and Technology Forum, which has a more general audience. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Often, though, you can find the answer by searching the forums before you post.

How well supported is the Macintosh?

Not as well as Windows. Topo 7 is the major software component needed to get full functionality from the PN-40. Topo 7 runs only on Windows. So you will need to run some flavor of virtual machine software on your Mac in order to use Topo 7. Without Topo 7, you can use the pre-cut topo and road maps which come with your PN-40 -- but you cannot download and use additional maps or imagery. You cannot transfer waypoints, tracks or routes between your PN-40 and your desktop PC. Using the Send to GPS function on geocaching.com, you can transfer one cache at a time to your unit. You can also upload your field notes. Some of these shortcomings will be addressed by the Cache Register program, which will run on both Windows and the Mac. Stay tuned. Bold text
