Find/Search
The Find/Search feature of the PN-40 is activated by pressing the magnifying glass button. What you see next depends on your last search parameters.
Show
The first line of the Find Page controls what type of results will be returned. This line is the "Show" line. The screenshots below show the possible values. If the PN-40 detects a DRAW layer map during start-up, then "Draw Layers" will be added to the list of possible "Show" values.
Find By
The search can be based on "Near Map Center", or "Find by Name". To change, press MENU.
- If search is currently based on Near Map Center, then select "Switch to Find by Name".
- If search is currently based on Find by Name, then select "Switch to Near Map Center".
\When "Find by Name" has been selected, additional data fields are displayed. In the example below, the additional data fields are: State, Country, City, and Name. These data fields allow you to narrow your search to a Country, a State, a City, and/or a Name.
Additionally, when "Find by Name" has been selected, you can also choose between "Name Begins With" or "Name Contains". To change, press MENU.
- If search is currently based on Name Begins With, then select "Switch to Name Contains".
- If search is currently based on Name Contains, then select "Switch to Name Begins With".
To quickly clear the additional data fields (i.e., State, Country, City, and Name), press MENU, using the UP/DOWN rocker pad select "Clear All Fields", then press ENTER.
How the results are arranged:
- When Near Map Center is selected, the results are arranged by distance from Map Center.
- When Find by Name is selected, the results are arranged alphabetically.
What results are returned:
- Only results from maps that are enabled will be returned. (See Data Management).
- Only results that match the search criteria will be returned.
Where do the Results come from?
- Any enabled Topo USA Data Series map will be searched for results.
- Any enabled DRAW Layer map will be searched for results.
- Any enabled GIS layer map will be searched for results.
- Raster maps are not searched (i.e., DOQQ, CDOQQ, USGS, SAT10, IMAGEREG, NOAA, etc).
- Results are also returned from the built-in Regional Maps and Base Maps.
Show: All
This type of search will return results from all types. If possible, use one of the search types below to narrow down the results. The left screenshot shows results when find by is Near Map Center, the right screenshot is find by Name. When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by providing the Country, State, City, and/or a Name. The Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
Show: Recent Finds
The type of search returns results from past searches.
Show: Draw Layers
This type of search only returns results from DRAW layer maps. The left screenshot shows results when find by is Near Map Center, the right screenshot is find by Name. When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by entering a Name. The Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
Show: Waypoints
This type of search only returns results that are waypoints. In addition to narrowing your search by using Find by Name, you can also narrow your search by changing Symbol from "ALL" to a specific type of waypoint symbol. When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by entering a Name. The Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
Show: Geocaches
This type of search only returns results that are geocaches. In addition to narrowing your search by using Find by Name, you can also narrow your search by changing Symbol from "ALL" to a specific type of geocache symbol. When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by entering a Name. The Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
Show: Points of Interest
This type of search will return results that are Points of Interest In addition to narrowing your search by using Find by Name, you can also narrow your search by changing the Category from "All Categories" to a specific type of POI. When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by providing the Country, State, City, and/or a Name. The Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
Show: Natural Features
This type of search will return results that are Natural Features. In addition to narrowing your search by using Find by Name, you can also narrow your search by changing the Category from "All Categories" to a specific type of Natural Feature. When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by providing the Country, State, City, and/or a Name. The Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
Show: Addresses
This type of search will return results that are Addresses When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by providing the Country, State, City, Building Number, and/or a Street Name. The Street Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
Show: Coordinates
This type of search will return results that are for a Coordinate. While the firmware allows you to switch between "Near Map Center" and "Find by Name", there is no difference in the results or no additional data fields. After highlighting the coordinate data field and pressing ENTER, you can edit the value.
Show: Streets/Trails
This type of search will return results that for Streets or Trails. When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by providing the Country, State, City, and/or a Name. The Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
Show: Cites
This type of search will return results that for Cities. When searching by Name, you can narrow down the search by providing the Country, State, and/or a Name. The Name field can be set to either "Name Contains" or "Name Begins With".
