Create Screenshots
You can create screenshots while you use your PN-40 in the field.
In order to capture screenshots, you must have an SD card installed.
To enable screenshots:
- Turn the PN-40 off.
- Connect it to your computer.
- Turn the unit on.
- When prompted, scroll to Map Transfer and press Enter.
- Scroll to Transfer to SD Card and press Enter. This makes the SD card available as a removable USB drive.
- On Windows, use Windows Explorer to create a directory called "screenshots" (lower case, one word, note the "s" on the end) in the root of the removable drive. On the Mac, use the equivalent function to create the directory.
- Press Enter (on the Done button) on the device. This dismounts the removable drive.
Once you have enabled screenshots, capture one as follows.
- Momentarily press the Power button as if you were turning the unit off. This captures the current screen contents.
- If you also want to power down, press Enter to do so.
- If you just wanted to capture a screenshot, press Quit instead.
Each time you capture a screenshot, the unit creates a .bmp file in the screenshots folder. The file is a color bitmap (24-bit color depth), 176x220 pixels. The file is approximately 128kB in size. The filename contains the date and time of the screenshot. For example, screencap-2009-02-28--21-06-38.bmp was created at 9:06:38 pm on February 28, 2009.
As a reminder that screenshots are enabled, the tone you hear when you press the power button is slightly different. When the directory is present, the unit //always// captures a screenshot when you initiate the power-down sequence. There is presently no (apparent) way to avoid this. Be sure to manage the screenshot files carefully to avoid eventually filling the SD card.
To access your screenshots:
- Turn the PN-40 off.
- Connect it to your computer.
- Turn the unit on.
- When prompted, scroll to Map Transfer and press Enter.
- Scroll to Transfer to SD Card and press Enter. This makes the SD card available as a removable USB drive.
- On Windows, use Windows Explorer to view, copy and delete your screenshots. Similar functionality is available on the Mac.
- Press Enter (on the Done button) on the device. This dismounts the removable drive.
